Grammy-nominated producer and second-generation musician from the West Coast hip hop scene, with credits including DJ Rectangle, La Mala Rodriguez, Eminem and Xzibit.

Biography

Brown first appeared on the West Coast Hip Hop scene as a session Guitarist for Platinum Producer, Warren G DeeJay and DMC freestyle Turntable Champion DJ Rectangle. Under Rectangle’s tutelage Brown fast moved into beat making, production and engineering. With so many artists coming through the studio he quickly became most artists’ favourite tracking engineer thanks to his deeply involved style and willingness to push performers’ limitations whilst simultaneously empowering them as artists.

A second-generation musician and Grammy-nominated producer, Brown started out recording on a 4-track cassette machine, which led to a label contract in his mid twenties. His credits also include work for Hollywood Records, Disney+ and HULU.

Today he works almost entirely in the box: the input chain is analogue outboard gear, and everything after it runs on plugins, which makes the quality of those plugins central to his productions.

Beginnings

From touring with heavy rock band called Hope ’n’ Glory at just 15 years of age, playing with acid jazz groups, witnessing the birth of Drum & Bass music then signing a major record deal as a songwriter and urban solo performer during the mid 90’s, Brown’s eclectic style and willingness to obliterate boundaries has become something of a calling card.

Career

It was sometime during the mid 2000’s that Universal Machete sent their premier rap artist, La Mala Rodriguez to Las Vegas to work with Rectangle and Brown. The idea was to record a high profile, West Coast influenced single for her much anticipated Album, Malamarismo. After hearing a selection of tracks that Brown had been working on she ended up picking three more for the album which went on to be nominated for Best Urban Music Album at the 8th Latin Grammy® Awards alongside Daddy Yankee and Calle 13.

During the Summer of 2023 Brown was asked to bring his emotionally connective style to augment the powerful and unusual story of the Brawn Formula One racing team in a high profile project put together by Simon Hammerson and Keanu Reeves for Disney+.

The soundtrack was received exceptionally well and Brawn ended up with a well earned Emmy win.

Atmos

During this time Brown had also become fascinated by Dolby Atmos – the immersive audio format that is fast becoming ubiquitous thanks to giants like Apple Music and Tidal pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Working closely with premier partner companies like Fluid Audio, Audient and Sonarworks, Brown is again pushing his creativity into a burgeoning, creative marketplace full of new challenges and alternate future outcomes.

Backs Pro Bundle

Backs Pro EQ

“I like EQ’s that are not full of numbers and on the Backs Pro EQ it’s very easy to blow some Pultec-esque voodoo on the bottom end before dialing up the frequency which cunningly just spreads the already broad curve, adding without undoing your initial setting. Brilliant.”

Motone Pro Bundle

Motone Pro EQ

“The Motone Pro is a remarkably user-friendly EQ. I tend to work in stepped mode as I dig the fixed frequency choices. You can do surgery without being surgical and then there’s that phase-free stereo widener which allows you to place your signal in the sweet spot almost every time.”

Prestige Racks

Prestige Racks

“Prestige Racks is a Banga. I love that there are limited ‘500’ units available but it’s enough to handle most situations. The Gate on the output is not only smart it’s effective and intuitive to dial in fast, to clean up if you’re rinsing the preamp particularly hard. A really useful and well thought out plugin.”
